Kerala court rejects SIT plea to cancel bail of accused

The Vadakara Judicial First Class Magistrate Court dismissed the Special Investigation Team's application seeking cancellation of bail granted to Jithin Bhaskaran in the Kafir screenshot case.

The Vadakara Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kozhikode dismissed the application on July 17 after hearing submissions from the prosecution and the defence.

The prosecution argued that Bhaskaran breached bail conditions following his release on July 3. It alleged he posted messages on Facebook challenging the investigating team and attempted to create public unrest.

Bhaskaran, a local DYFI leader, was arrested on June 16. The case concerns circulation of a screenshot during the Vadakara Lok Sabha election campaign that portrayed candidates Shafi Parambil and K.K. Shailaja in a certain manner while falsely attributing it to another person.

In a related development the same day, the Kozhikode Sessions Court granted anticipatory bail to DYFI leader Ribesh Ramakrishnan.
