Opposition claims government has seized economic sectors

Opposition leaders have claimed the government has captured key economic sectors, urging Kenyans to oust the Kenya Kwanza administration in upcoming elections. The statements were made during a multi-denominational church service in Gatanga, Murang’a County.

During a multi-denominational church service in Gatanga constituency, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, also DCP leader, claimed Chinese contractors suitable for a city rail project funded by the UK were sidelined for local cronies. The Chinese firm quoted Sh22 billion while the rival awarded the tender at Sh29 billion. “I urge the Chinese government to join us in protesting this action,” Gachagua said, also calling on the UK to probe the Sh7 billion difference. He stated sectors like cement, steel, and construction materials are now controlled by one person, extending to health, mining, banks, military, insurance, education, and public transport. He cited police seizing Raphael Tuju’s property and pressure on health facility owners. Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka criticized the reinstatement of Adani contracts and efforts to silence critics through judiciary and IEBC appointments. “We will not accept vote theft,” he said. Eugene Wamalwa said the regime has destroyed everything from abductions to theft, with removal as the solution. Justin Muturi addressed the seizure of Delmonte land in Murang’a by settlers despite parliament’s order to allocate it to 4,000 squatters, and claims last week of attempts to take over Nairobi Hospital where board members were arrested.

Rigathi Gachagua, DCP leader, accused the government of reviving a special 12-officer police unit—previously blamed for a January church attack—to disrupt opposition ahead of 2027 polls. He condemned a tear gas assault at his Kikuyu rally and vowed to press on with meetings, while allies criticised police politicisation. Kajiado police denied the claims.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has opened a probe into former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's remarks alleging President William Ruto's involvement in recovering Ksh500 million from a Ksh4 billion substandard fuel scandal. Gachagua made the claims during a speech at AIPCA Gakoe Church in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, and also threatened to mobilize Gen Zs over alleged ID discrimination. DCI dismissed the fuel allegations as false and malicious.

Opposition leaders in Meru County have entered political tensions that threaten to disrupt planned meetings scheduled from Thursday to Monday.
