山本氏は1月に多発性骨髄腫の治療に専念するため第一線を退いていたが、党代表は続けていた。2013年に初当選した元俳優の同氏は2019年に反体制派のれいわ新選組を設立した。
党は衆院に1議席、参院に5議席を有する。2月8日の総選挙前は衆院に8議席あった。
