Kolathur police arrested two men on Friday for allegedly using a counterfeit gold chain to obtain a loan of ₹97,000 from a local pawn shop.
The arrests followed a complaint from Eshwar Kumar, 62, who operates a jewellery pawn shop on Erikkarai Street in Periyar Nagar. A man had visited the shop on July 11 and pledged a chain weighing about one and a half sovereigns in exchange for the cash.
Routine checks later revealed the item was fake. V-6 Kolathur Crime Police registered a case and reviewed CCTV footage from the premises.
Officers detained Purushothaman, 28, and Inbarasu, 44, both residents of Perambur. Investigations continue to locate a third person linked to the incident.
