Amnesty calls for probe into Ol Kalou by-election offences

Amnesty International Kenya has urged state agencies to investigate alleged election offences ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election scheduled for July 16.

Amnesty International Kenya issued a statement on July 12 calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to act urgently.

The organisation cited reports of voter inducement through cash, mattresses, LPG cylinders and food items during the campaign period. It also highlighted claims that state projects were timed to influence voters and that local administrators had mobilised residents in breach of electoral laws.

Amnesty described the incidents as a systematic pattern that violates Article 38 of the Constitution. The group pointed to violence including clashes between rival supporters and an attack on a Democracy for the Citizens Party campaign truck in Gilgil on July 11.

The statement demanded investigations and prosecutions regardless of political office. It also called on the IEBC to consider postponing the vote if minimum standards of credibility cannot be guaranteed.
