Bumblebees accumulate up to seven times more heavy metals than honeybees

A new study shows bumblebees collect far higher levels of toxic heavy metals than honeybees, even when foraging in the same areas. Researchers from the University of Cambridge warn that this exposure could harm bee health and colony success.

Scientists collected pollen and bees from colonies in Cambridgeshire, England, where soil contamination is considered low. They measured levels of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, and tin.

Bumblebee pollen contained two to seven times more heavy metals than honeybee pollen. Bumblebees also had roughly three times higher metal concentrations in their bodies.

Dr. Sarah Scott, who led the research, said most levels were not high enough to kill bees but could still affect foraging and reproduction. Professor Lynn Dicks noted that even rural areas pose risks due to differences in nesting and foraging habits.

The study was published in Ecological Entomology. Researchers encouraged continued planting of flowers to support pollinators despite the findings.
