Senator Cleitinho Azevedo (Republicanos/MG) informed allies that he will run for governor of Minas Gerais in the 2026 elections, following signs of hesitation.
Cleitinho posted on Tuesday night (28) an AI video in which he receives a mission from his late father and brother Matheus. In the caption, he wrote: “I will follow the mission”.
The senator communicated the decision to his brother Eduardo Azevedo, state deputy for the PL, and to a PL leader on Monday (27). The PL will discuss support in a meeting on Tuesday (28), with possible participation from the Republicanos leadership.
A Genial/Quaest poll released on Tuesday shows Cleitinho leading the first round with 34% to 35% of voting intentions, ahead of the second place by more than 20 points. He also wins all second-round scenarios.
