Court overturns injunction as ANP starts hearing on abusive fuel prices

The National Petroleum Agency began a public hearing on Monday on rules to define abusive fuel prices after an injunction suspending the event was overturned.

The hearing scheduled for June 15 in the Federal District was initially suspended by an injunction from Judge Diego Câmara Alves of the 17th Federal Court. The ruling responded to a request from Fecombustíveis, which challenged the five-day public consultation period.

The federal government overturned the injunction on the same Monday. The ANP is debating two resolutions that cap profit margin increases at 10% for gas stations and distributors during crises or wars, with fines of up to R$500 million.

Sector representatives criticized the proposal during the hearing. Fecombustíveis president James Thorp Neto said the measure freezes the market and free competition. The ANP extended the debate to Thursday due to high demand.
