Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai rejected proposals to shoot robbers on the spot without legal process. He stressed that all criminals must be captured alive for proper legal proceedings.
Pigai made the statement in Bandung on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. He said live capture is essential to uncover crime networks and motives through official investigation.
Pigai affirmed that the state must not deprive any citizen of the right to life without due legal process. He also urged caution with statements by officials supporting immediate shootings, as they could carry legal consequences.
Earlier, Lampung regional police chief Irjen Pol Helfi Assegaf ordered officers to shoot robbers on the spot, citing public disturbance from such crimes.
