Israel lifts Ebola travel restrictions on Kenya

Israel has removed Kenya from its list of countries subject to temporary Ebola-related travel restrictions. The decision follows a protest by Kenyan officials. Rwanda was also removed from the list.

The Israeli Embassy in Kenya announced the change on June 15. It stated that the Ministry of Health had decided to lift the measures for both Kenya and Rwanda.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Abraham Korir Sing’Oei welcomed the move. He noted that Kenya’s inclusion had been surprising given its public health record and preparedness steps.

The restrictions had been introduced on June 10. They applied to travellers from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kenyan authorities had screened more than 100,000 international travellers and planned additional isolation facilities with United States support.
