일본 재무성은 연간 외국인 방문객 6천만 명 목표 달성을 지원하기 위해 2030년까지 모든 공항 세관 신고 절차를 전면 디지털화하겠다고 발표했다.
재무성은 화요일 '스마트하고 안전한 국경 관리: 세관 비전 2030'이라는 제목의 계획을 공개했다. 앞으로 승객들은 온라인으로 이름과 주소 등을 입력한 뒤 생성된 QR 코드를 활용해 세관 신고를 완료하게 된다.
전자 신고 제도는 2019년에 도입되었으나, 2026년 4월 기준으로도 여전히 전체 신청의 절반가량이 종이 서류를 통해 이루어졌다. 일본 정부는 2030년까지 나리타 및 오사카 공항 등 주요 공항에 AI 기반 X-ray 검사 시스템을 배치할 계획이다.
지난해 외국인 방문객 수가 처음으로 4천만 명을 넘어선 가운데, 이번 조치는 세관 공무원들의 업무 부담을 완화하기 위한 목적도 담고 있다.
