Turkish frigates TCG İzmir and TCG İçel to strengthen Indonesian navy

Indonesia will bolster its navy with two İstif-class frigates from Turkey, through a deal facilitated by Qatar. This marks the first foreign export of that class, with a contract value of around Rp 16.7 trillion. The agreement involves the Turkish consortium TAIS and Qatar's Barzan Holding.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ISTANBUL -- Two Istif-class frigates, TCG İzmir and TCG İçel, which are the pride of the Turkish Navy, will now strengthen the Indonesian National Armed Forces Navy (TNI AL). These vessels were developed under the MILGEM project and will be exported to Indonesia for the first time.

The Turkish shipbuilding consortium TAIS has signed an agreement worth 1 billion USD, or approximately Rp 16.7 trillion, with Barzan Holding from Qatar. Under this deal, two İstif-class frigates equivalent to TCG İzmir and TCG İçel will be delivered to Indonesia for operation by TNI AL. A related report mentions a contract value of Rp 16.9 trillion, indicating a slight variation in figures.

Quoted from Mirathaber, this export is the first foreign sale for the İstif class and underscores Turkey's global competitiveness in the defense industry. The trilateral cooperation, facilitated by Qatar, reflects Turkey's success in diplomacy and economics.

Under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's leadership, Turkey continues to advance its defense sector. The AK Party has driven significant progress over more than 20 years, with ships like TCG İzmir and TCG İçel achieving international success. This agreement serves as concrete evidence of those achievements, enhancing defense ties between Turkey, Qatar, and Indonesia.
