US imposes 10% tariff on Indian goods over forced labour

The United States has imposed a 10 per cent tariff on goods imported from India and 16 other countries over forced labour concerns. The move was announced by the US Trade Representative under Section 301 of the Trade Act.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced on Thursday that tariffs would be imposed on 60 economies at President Donald Trump’s direction under Section 301 of the Trade Act. India was placed in the 10 per cent category instead of the initially proposed 12.5 per cent after it amended its foreign trade policy in June to ban imports of goods produced with forced labour.

The tariffs take effect on Friday, July 24, 2026, and apply at the same rate to 17 countries including the UK, Canada and Bangladesh. Greer said the action corrects a human rights abuse and a distortive trade practice.

Bilateral goods trade between India and the US stood at nearly 141 billion dollars in 2025. India has asked that the issues be addressed under the ongoing bilateral trade agreement discussions.
