Residents of historic Hong Kong village run out of options as eviction looms

Tin Sam Tsuen in Hung Shui Kiu is set to be levelled for the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area under the Northern Metropolis project. Residents say they have run out of options.

Tin Sam Tsuen in northern Hong Kong is home to about 50 households. The village features traditional brick houses and an ancestral hall and has stood for hundreds of years.

Chan Ho-yee, who is in her forties, has lived in the house built by her late father since birth. She said the Chan clan has been settled in the village for more than 360 years.

“In the past, during Chinese New Year, all neighbours would visit our grandfather here at our ancestral house,” she recalled. “When one of our uncles got married, we cooked poon choi here and held a flowing banquet for three days,” Chan said.

The village is set to be levelled to make way for the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area as part of the Northern Metropolis megaproject.
