Texas man sentenced to life for strangling 4-year-old girl

A 43-year-old man in Perryton, Texas, has pleaded guilty to capital murder after strangling a 4-year-old girl and setting her home on fire. Firefighters discovered the child's body during a response to the blaze in July 2022. The perpetrator, Humberto Martinez, will spend the rest of his life in prison without parole.

On July 20, 2022, around 10 a.m., the Perryton Fire Department responded to a fire at a home on the 800 block of South Drake Street in Perryton, located in the northwest Texas Panhandle, less than 10 miles from Oklahoma. The fire was mostly confined to one room.

As firefighters extinguished the flames, they found 4-year-old Hope Raley dead in her bed, having been strangled. A homeowner present at the scene informed authorities of a man inside the house. During the search, responders located Humberto Martinez, 43, hiding in a crawl space beneath the home.

Investigators determined that Martinez had strangled the child and then set fire to her room. He was charged with capital murder of a person under 10 years of age, arson, and two counts of obstruction or retaliation.

Martinez recently pleaded guilty to the capital murder charge, leading to a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, according to Ochiltree County court records. Details on how Martinez came to be at the home remain unclear.

Former Perryton Police Assistant Chief Nick Yara described the case as profoundly disturbing. "We've seen a lot of things, I've seen a lot of things in my career and this is by far the worst case that I ever had to deal with," Yara told local outlet KFDA. He added, "It's a very tragic thing for the family and for the community and today we were lucky to see justice."

The incident has left a lasting impact on the small community, highlighting the severity of the crimes committed.
