ASEAN treaty conference tackles conflict and security

The Philippines hosted the first high-level conference of parties to the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Manila to mark its 50th anniversary.

The event at the Philippine International Convention Center focused on conflict prevention, preventive diplomacy, maritime security and emerging threats. Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro delivered the keynote address and welcomed Sweden, Poland, Romania and Lithuania as new high-contracting parties.

Lazaro said the treaty has guided ASEAN in maintaining regional stability. She noted that 62 parties now represent nearly three quarters of humanity and stressed the need for adherence to the rule of law.

ASEAN foreign ministers and dialogue partners concluded the five-day meeting after adopting guidelines to deepen engagement with external partners. The Philippines chairs ASEAN this year.
