Philippines, Dutch officials discuss open trade routes

Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen and Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro met in The Hague to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties and stress the need for open trade routes.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro visited the Netherlands from May 17 to 18 for talks with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen. The meeting marked the first official visit by a Philippine foreign affairs secretary to the country in 33 years.

The two officials highlighted the importance of open trade routes and upholding the law of the sea. Berendsen noted that partnerships between Europe and Asia matter more than ever amid global uncertainty.

Lazaro said the visit aimed to strengthen cooperation in trade, investments, renewable energy, and maritime security. Both sides agreed to expand cultural and academic exchanges in the years ahead.
