Ateneo de Davao renames court after Rene Baterbonia

Ateneo de Davao University has renamed a court and retired the jersey of alumnus Rene Baterbonia. The school also announced full scholarships for his six siblings.

Ateneo de Davao Senior High School renamed the court at its Bangkal Campus in Davao City to the Rene Baterbonia Covered Court. It also retired his No. 2 jersey on Sunday, June 14.

School president Fr. Karel San Juan announced on Saturday, June 13, that the university will provide full scholarships from basic education to college for Baterbonia’s six siblings. He spoke after a mass at Christ the King Chapel.

Baterbonia, who was 18 and from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, led Ateneo de Davao to gold medals in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa and the 2025 ASEAN School Games. He drowned on June 8 in Dipaculao, Aurora, along with teammate Divine Adili.

Head coach Jess Evangelio said the tribute honors Baterbonia’s humility and sacrifices. The National Bureau of Investigation is looking into the deaths.
