The BBC has reduced John McEnroe's pay for tennis commentary, with his fee now falling below the corporation's disclosure threshold for a second consecutive year.
The pay cut follows widespread criticism of McEnroe's work during this year's Wimbledon tournament. His salary disclosures show earnings dropped from between £195,000 and £199,000 in the prior season to below £178,000.
McEnroe's comments drew particular scrutiny, including remarks about Serena Williams during her match against Maya Joint and repeated mispronunciations of player names. He also left a third-round match mid-broadcast to cover another event.
The BBC introduced new commentators such as Jamie Murray and Laura Robson this year as part of a broader shift in its coverage. McEnroe continues to split duties between the BBC and ESPN and is expected to return for the US Open.
