Blasting resumes in Garpenberg mine after March collapse

Blasting resumed on Wednesday in parts of Boliden's Garpenberg mine in Hedemora after a halt due to a collapse and several quakes in March. Four people were taken to hospital following the collapse on March 14. Boliden states the work is proceeding safely and systematically.

Blasting in Garpenberg mine resumed around 16:00 on Wednesday, April 23. Normal blasting times of 16:00 and 04:00 now apply in parts unaffected by the collapse.

A strong quake triggered a collapse in the mine on March 14. Four people were taken to hospital, the mine was evacuated, and all underground work halted. Several subsequent quakes occurred.

Boliden has stated that parts of the mine are so damaged that production cannot resume there throughout 2026. "We are working safely and systematically to return to production under the new conditions," the company wrote on its social media.

Regular operations have partially resumed from April 22 in undamaged sections, according to reports.
