Ore elevator back in use at Garpenberg mine but full operations years away

Recovery work after the spring rockfall at the Garpenberg mine is proceeding according to plan, according to Boliden. However, production remains at around 30 percent of previous levels.

The ore elevator, halted for safety reasons after the rockfall that sent four people to hospital, is now back in use. Production of the so-called paste, to be used to fill the affected ore body, has begun.

During the second quarter, production has resumed in areas unaffected by the rockfall. Lappberget, which accounts for about 70 percent of ore production, remains completely stopped and is expected to stay closed for at least all of 2026.

Boliden’s results for the quarter are negatively affected. So far the tremor has caused losses of approximately 1.1 billion kronor in write-downs and production shortfalls during the first quarter. The total financial impact is expected to be considerably larger. In the short term Garpenberg remains at about one third of its capacity, says communications chief Klas Nilsson.
