Ringhals 4 at half capacity affects electricity prices

One turbine at reactor 4 of the Ringhals nuclear power plant has been taken out of service since Saturday evening. The reactor is now operating at half capacity, according to Vattenfall.

The production interruption is expected to last into the beginning of next week. The cause is a water leak in one generator.

Half of Sweden's nuclear reactors are already closed for maintenance. Ringhals 3 has been shut down since the beginning of May.

Patrik Södersten, electricity price expert at Fortum, says the outage is keeping electricity prices high in southern Sweden. There the price is expected to reach 74 öre tomorrow compared with 19 öre today.

Experts point to cold weather, weak winds, and increased exports as causes of the shock. Forecasts suggest March may be cheaper, but uncertainties remain.
