BYD unveils Japan-specific EV at Mobility Show

China's EV giant BYD has unveiled its new mini-EV 'Racco' tailored for the Japanese market at the Japan Mobility Show. The event follows a press preview on Wednesday and officially starts Thursday, opening to the public from Friday through November 9. New models from domestic makers are also on display, drawing attention to the future of electric vehicles.

The Japan Mobility Show opened with a press preview on October 29, 2025, at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto Ward. Around 500 companies and organizations are participating, a record high. Domestic and international automakers are showcasing new models and prototypes, while parts makers and telecom firms present the latest autonomous driving technologies.

BYD, the world's largest EV manufacturer, is drawing significant attention with its commitment to the Japanese market, as executives stressed during the preview. The company introduced new models, including the Racco minivehicle slated for launch next summer—the first BYD model exclusively made for a specific market.

Toyota is exhibiting its Land Cruiser FJ SUV, set for sale in 2026, and a prototype of a two-door coupe version of its luxury Century car. Chairman Akio Toyoda stated, “We want to cultivate [the Century] as a brand that brings the spirit of Japan … out into the world.” The Century will become an independent brand, separate from Toyota.

Honda will unveil an electric SUV from its 0 Series, scheduled for sale in Japan and India starting in 2027, along with a sustainable rocket that completed launch and landing tests. Nissan is showing its latest Elgrand large minivan, planned for domestic launch in summer 2026.

Formerly the Tokyo Motor Show, the event adopted its current name in 2023. In Japan, where battery EVs remain a niche, the show highlights models expected to debut and boost adoption.
