Cameron Young secured his first marquee PGA Tour victory at the Players Championship, using a distinctive set of Titleist clubs. He made recent adjustments to his driver and other clubs to optimize performance. The win came seven months after his breakthrough at the Wyndham Championship.
Cameron Young claimed victory at the Players Championship, marking his first major PGA Tour success since winning the Wyndham Championship seven months earlier. He relies on a complete Titleist club setup, noted for its uniqueness among staff players. Key recent changes included switching from a Titleist GT2 driver to an 11-degree GT3 model, lofted down by 0.75 degrees in the D1 setting. This adjustment, developed with Titleist’s Director of Player Promotion J.J. Van Wezenbeeck and Director of Tour Research & Validation Fordie Pitts, increased his launch angle from 9 to 11 degrees while raising spin slightly from 2400 to 2500 rpm. The change complemented his switch last summer to the Pro V1x Double Dot Prototype ball, which flies lower; Young was among the first to adopt it, alongside Bryson DeChambeau briefly. On the 18th hole at TPC Sawgrass, Young hit a 375-yard drive, the longest recorded in the ShotLink era on that hole. Additional updates involved replacing his fairway wood and hybrid with high-launch GT1 models. The GT1 hybrid features a Diamana PD 80 TX shaft matching his 3-wood, designed as a '5-wood type golf club' with a .335 tip and hybrid hosel, as Van Wezenbeeck explained: “For Cam Young, we were trying to create more of a 5-wood type golf club, so we were able to build it with a 5-wood shaft and use a .335 tip on the interior diameter, but a hybrid outside diameter [on the hosel]. We get kind of the best of both.” Both GT1 clubs use front-biased weights for lower flight and spin.
