At the 31st edition of the fundraising gala in Leipzig's Media City, 79-year-old Spanish opera singer José Carreras collected more than 3.4 million euros for his leukemia foundation. The event was broadcast on MDR on Wednesday evening and attracted national and international artists. Performers included Alvaro Soler, Beatrice Egli, and Chris de Burgh, who urged the audience to donate.
Celebrities such as entertainer Stefan Mross, fitness influencer Sophia Thiel, and musician Joey Kelly also participated by taking pledges over the phone. Carreras, diagnosed with leukemia in 1987 and recovered afterward, established the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation. Since its inception, it has raised around 250 million euros for research, infrastructure, and social projects.
Last year, at the anniversary gala, over 3.5 million euros were gathered. The singer expressed his appreciation: "I bow to our donors for this generous and sustainable support." The foundation uses the funds to advance scientific leukemia research and aid those affected.
