Cebu City resumes waste hauling to Aloguinsan

Cebu City resumed hauling its garbage to a private landfill in Aloguinsan town on June 1 to reduce the growing waste stockpile at the South Road Properties staging area.

City officials raised concerns over possible environmental, public health, and safety risks from the buildup of garbage at the temporary site. Mayor Nestor Archival said the city government aims to clear the area within the next 15 to 30 days.

Archival noted that hauling would continue to Aloguinsan while awaiting the results of a safety assessment at the landfill facility in Barangay Binaliw. Operations there would resume only after the Waste Crisis Task Force completes its evaluation.

The city produces 600 to 700 tons of garbage daily. Transporting waste to Aloguinsan previously cost ₱3,906 per ton, compared with ₱1,100 per ton at the Binaliw site. Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña warned that the city could no longer sustain the costs and sought 30 to 60 days to develop a long-term solution, including a proposed ₱360 million loan for a new waste facility.
