The Addis Ababa City Administration has started fencing the perimeter of the Qoshe landfill and setting up police checkpoints to control the site.
The Qoshe landfill has functioned as an unmanaged open dumping ground for more than half a century. Officials are now converting it into a controlled municipal utility. The goal is to end illegal dumping and shield nearby residential areas from toxic environmental effects. The drive draws on past incidents of public risk at the site. One example is the 2017 landslide that killed more than 116 people. Work includes physical barriers around the perimeter along with new police checkpoints. The changes aim to manage access and operations at the location.
