China's power demand hits new record amid summer heat

China's nationwide electricity load reached a record 1.551 billion kilowatts on Tuesday, surpassing the previous high set four days earlier. The National Energy Administration said overall power supply remained stable.

The National Energy Administration said the maximum cross-regional electricity transfer reached 278 million kilowatts on Tuesday, up from 263 million kilowatts the previous week. Power loads in central China and the grids of southern Hebei, Sichuan, Hubei and Hunan also hit historic highs.

Authorities said the country's overall power supply remained stable with no demand-response measures or power rationing required. China has forecast peak electricity demand this year of between 1.575 billion and 1.6 billion kilowatts, which could be exceeded if extreme heat continues.

The China Electricity Council had reported an earlier record of 1.518 billion kilowatts on July 10 and warned the peak could top 1.6 billion kilowatts if extreme heat hits large parts of the country.
