Church chapter investigates Prime Minister's wife

The cathedral chapter in the Diocese of Strängnäs has launched an investigation into whether Birgitta Ed's foundation at Fållökna is compatible with her priestly vows.

The investigation began after about ten complaints were submitted to the cathedral chapter. Diocesan lawyer Lotta Lind said the complaints relate to what has been highlighted in the media and whether the activities follow the church's order.

A decision may come as early as August 20. Lind stated that such a process usually takes a few months.

Birgitta Ed is married to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and has worked as a priest and operations developer at the Strängnäs cathedral administration with Aspö since 2023. She will continue her work during the investigation, according to the Strängnäs parish.

Initial reactions on X include criticism of Birgitta Ed's foundation activities as nepotism or corruption, skepticism that complaints are politically motivated ahead of elections, sarcastic commentary on her vows, and neutral shares from journalists about the church investigation.
