Cianjur regent threatens to dismiss civil servants in online gambling

A PPPK teacher in Cianjur got involved in online gambling, leading to a robbery to pay off debts. The Cianjur Regency Government affirms strict sanctions, including dismissal, for civil servants involved. Regent Mohammad Wahyu Ferdian has instructed tight supervision of employees.

The Cianjur Regency Government in West Java has taken a firm stance against civil servants (ASN) involved in online gambling. Regent Mohammad Wahyu Ferdian stated that strict sanctions up to dismissal will be imposed on ASN found guilty, as it is considered a serious violation that can lead to legal and administrative penalties.

"We impose strict sanctions on ASN involved in online gambling because it is a serious violation that can result in legal and administrative sanctions," Wahyu said in Cianjur on Tuesday (January 21, 2026).

Since taking office, the regent has instructed heads of Regional Device Organizations (OPD) to closely monitor subordinates, including routine phone checks. This measure aims to maintain the integrity and professionalism of ASN and prevent social and economic impacts from online gambling. ASN caught storing or accessing gambling apps will be sanctioned per regulations.

"We ask department heads and sections in each department to routinely conduct checks to ensure no gambling sites or apps are on employees' phones," he added.

The latest case involves PPPK teacher initialed MIR (33), who was dragged into a robbery with violence case to pay off online gambling debts. Head of the Personnel and Human Resources Development Agency (BKPSDM) Cianjur, Akos Koswara, revealed that MIR will be dismissed following an official report from the Education and Culture Office.

"We will immediately issue a dismissal letter for MIR (33), the PPPK teacher involved in the robbery and assault case against an elderly woman in Sukanagara Subdistrict, after receiving the official report from the Cianjur Education and Culture Office," Koswara said.

The Cianjur Resort Police have arrested MIR, who works as a teacher at one of the local high schools. The robbery targeted grandmother Sopiah (69), causing serious injuries and the loss of jewelry worth Rp126 million.
