Edinburgh Film Festival announces competition lineup and awards

The Edinburgh International Film Festival will screen 21 feature films this year, with 10 competing for the Sean Connery Prize from August 13 to 19.

Titles in competition include Paul Wright’s Mission, starring George MacKay, and the documentary The Mad World of Harvey Kurtzman featuring contributions from Terry Gilliam, the late Stan Lee and Robert Crumb.

Kenneth Branagh will receive the festival’s new honorary Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award and take part in a career discussion. Christine Vachon, Ken Burns and Ewan McGregor will also hold on-stage Q&A sessions.

Out of competition screenings feature films such as Nicolas Winding Refn’s Her Private Hell and Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex. A 30th anniversary screening of Trainspotting will include live commentary and DJ sets.

Festival director Paul Ridd said the lineup offers a panoramic vision of cinema and described Edinburgh as the only place to be in August.
