Egypt calls for halt to US-Iran escalation in Hormuz

Egypt urged an immediate end to military operations and escalation in the Gulf region on Saturday. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the need to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea during calls with counterparts from Oman and Iran.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held telephone discussions with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. He called on all sides to seek political and diplomatic solutions while warning that threats to key waterways could harm regional security and global trade.

US Central Command announced fresh strikes on Iranian targets aimed at reducing capabilities used against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump stated that Iran remained in contact with Washington and sought an agreement but was not yet ready to conclude one.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy reported stopping four vessels in 24 hours. Iranian officials said they would reject any temporary ceasefire unless demands over the strait were met. Qatar and Pakistan proposed returning to positions held before July 9 to restart talks.

Military activity continued with reports of Iranian strikes on US facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait. A Greek-operated air defence system in Saudi Arabia intercepted missiles, while incidents involving tankers occurred in the Gulf of Oman.
