Ethiopia expands community-based health insurance service

The Ethiopian government under Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed has expanded the Community-Based Health Insurance service across all regions. In budget year 2017, over 63 million citizens became beneficiaries, with the government subsidizing membership fees for 19 million. This initiative ensures quality healthcare access without high costs for the vulnerable.

Addis Ababa, Megabit 23, 2018 (Fana) - The Ethiopian government, following the national lottery, is implementing various strategies to foster a healthy and productive citizenry under Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed's leadership. Among these, the Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) has been significantly expanded to ensure access to quality care during sudden illnesses.

The service covers vulnerable citizens unable to pay through government subsidies. Implemented across all regions and city administrations, in budget year 2017 over 63 million people became beneficiaries, with fees for 19 million subsidized by the government. Over 13.7 million households enrolled as members.

Ethiopia launched CBHI recently but has achieved rapid growth compared to other African nations. The program is now integrating with the national ID system amid digitalization efforts, with work underway to ensure financial sustainability. Technology is being utilized to provide paperless services.
