EU says it cannot stop Sony ending physical PlayStation games

The European Union will not intervene to require Sony to continue manufacturing physical PlayStation games after 2028. EU Commissioner Michael McGrath stated that companies remain free to decide how they offer games and services.

Sony announced earlier this month that it will stop printing new physical Blu-ray discs for PlayStation games released in 2028 and beyond. Physical copies of existing titles will remain available for some time afterward.

McGrath spoke to reporters in Strasbourg this week. He said the issue comes down to commercial freedoms.

"It does come down to commercial and contractual freedoms," McGrath said. "And companies are free to offer games and services in the manner that they see fit, provided that consumer rights are fully protected in line with national and EU law."

The commissioner also addressed the Stop Killing Games movement. The EU Commission said last month it lacks authority to mandate server support or offline modes after online services end and will instead pursue a voluntary code of conduct with the industry.

Sony announced it will stop manufacturing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028. New titles will be available only in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and retailers. The move has sparked widespread online criticism from fans.

A boycott over Sony's plan to end physical game discs has lost some momentum following the release of old Call of Duty titles on PlayStation consoles. The company's announcement of Black Ops ports drew positive engagement instead of the usual backlash. Fans remain divided on the strength of the protest movement.

A UK class action lawsuit against Sony over its 30 percent commission fees on digital PlayStation purchases reaches its conclusion this week. The case, valued at $2.6 billion, covers consumers who bought games via PlayStation Network from August 2016 to February 2026. This follows a separate US antitrust settlement that received preliminary approval last month.

Sony has omitted any reference to releasing PlayStation games on PC in its latest annual strategy report. The company instead detailed new plans to integrate artificial intelligence across its studios and store.

A federal judge in the Northern District of California has granted preliminary approval to a $7.85 million class-action settlement against Sony Interactive Entertainment over alleged anticompetitive practices on the PlayStation Store. Eligible US PlayStation Network users who bought certain digital games or vouchers from April 1, 2019, to December 31, 2023, could receive automatic store credits or refunds, even if accounts are inactive (contact lawyers if former user). A final fairness hearing is set for October 15, 2026.
