Flu vaccination rates lag in Hong Kong as winter peak nears

Hong Kong is approaching the winter flu season, but vaccination rates among most age groups remain below the 70 per cent threshold needed for herd immunity, a leading government medical adviser has warned. Hong Kong is approaching the winter flu season, but vaccination rates among most age groups remain below the 70 per cent threshold needed for herd immunity, a leading government medical adviser has warned.

David Hui Shu-cheong, chairman of the government’s scientific committee on emerging and zoonotic diseases, on Saturday reminded the public to get vaccinated ahead of Lunar New Year, when social gatherings are frequent. He noted that 70 to 80 per cent of severe flu cases among both adults and children during the recent summer season involved unvaccinated patients.

“If the rate of respiratory samples testing positive for influenza, institutional outbreaks and hospitalisation rates continue to rise over the next two weeks, then we will be in the winter flu season,” Hui told a radio programme.

Hui, a respiratory disease expert, said it would be difficult to predict how long the flu season would last, adding that Hong Kong could be affected by different strains of influenza one after another. He noted that the city was first hit by H3N2 and then quickly followed by H1N1 for several months in 2023 and 2024.

According to Hui, the rate of respiratory samples testing positive for influenza rose from 3.9 per cent the week before to 4.6 per cent last week, edging very close to the baseline of 4.94 per cent. Data from the Centre for Health Protection and Hospital Authority underscore the urgency of vaccination to achieve herd immunity.

Influenza has truly arrived in Sweden. In the first week of the year, 2,131 cases were confirmed, a 22 percent increase from the end of the previous week. The spread is assessed as medium-high level, according to the Public Health Agency.

Hong Kong health authorities are urging residents to get the latest seasonal influenza vaccine as the city braces for a potential winter flu wave, with temperatures dropping to the season's lowest. The Centre for Health Protection's appeal coincides with concerns from an infectious disease specialist about low vaccination rates in the community. Recent data indicates the summer flu season is winding down.

Hong Kong health authorities are urging the public to get the latest Covid vaccine in a timely manner, as more than five months have passed since the last surge and the next wave is approaching. The Centre for Health Protection notes that Covid-19 active periods occur in cycles every six to nine months, linked to changes in predominant strains and declining herd immunity.

Hong Kong's forecaster issued its first cold weather warning of the season on New Year's Day, with urban temperatures expected to drop to a low of 12 degrees Celsius on Friday. A cold front moving across Guangdong's coastal areas will bring cooler weather to the city in the coming days. Temperatures in the New Territories could be a couple of degrees lower, with cold conditions persisting into Saturday morning.

Hong Kong's unemployment rate for the December to February period stood at 3.8 per cent, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous three months. Improvements were seen in retail, accommodation services, and foundation and superstructure sectors. Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han said the economy's growth momentum should support the labour market, though some sectors face challenges.
