Fog delays force marathon Sunday at Scottish Open

Dense fog known as the haar disrupted the third round of the Genesis Scottish Open on Saturday at Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland. Multiple delays pushed play late into the evening and left 24 players within four shots of the lead with significant holes remaining for Sunday.

The third round began as scheduled but was halted after about 90 minutes when visibility dropped too low to see fairway bunkers, penalty areas or greenside targets. Tournament officials waited until players could no longer make out contours required by the rules before stopping play for two and a half hours.

Leaders scheduled to tee off around 3:30 p.m. instead started after 6 p.m. Play resumed briefly before another suspension at 7:55 p.m. when coastal fog returned, leaving the round unfinished.

Michael Thorbjornsen holds a share of the lead at 11 under after a two-birdie streak and has 23 holes left on Sunday. Matthew Fitzpatrick is tied with him but faces 28 holes. Rory McIlroy and others will restart at 7 a.m. as long as the haar stays away.
