Ex-jogador dos Raiders lembra que preferia Gilliam a Bradshaw

Phil Villapiano, ex-linebacker do Oakland Raiders, disse que desejava que o Pittsburgh Steelers tivesse mantido Joe Gilliam como quarterback titular em vez de recorrer a Terry Bradshaw em 1974.

Villapiano fez os comentários durante uma entrevista na The Forum Media Network. Ele relembrou ter assistido Gilliam como titular dos Steelers e achava que a equipe deveria ter continuado com ele.

"Eu disse: 'Deixem esse cara aí para sempre'. Ele era horrível. Ele não chegava nem perto de Terry Bradshaw", disse Villapiano. "Eu teria escolhido Joe Gilliam a qualquer dia em vez de Terry Bradshaw, mas o treinador o odiava."

As observações referiam-se a um jogo da terceira semana daquela temporada, no qual os Raiders derrotaram os Steelers por 17 a 0 no Three Rivers Stadium. Gilliam acertou 8 de 31 passes com duas interceptações naquela partida.

Gilliam foi titular nos seis primeiros jogos da temporada de 1974 antes de Bradshaw assumir a posição. Os Steelers acabaram vencendo o Super Bowl IX com Bradshaw como quarterback.
