Free events abound in Denver this weekend

Denver kicks off 2026 with a variety of free activities, from art exhibits and live music to skating and birdwatching. Residents can explore cultural sites, join reading challenges, and enjoy holiday lights without spending a dime. Highlights include First Friday events on January 2 and outdoor pursuits on January 3.

As the new year begins, Denver offers numerous no-cost opportunities to engage with the community and arts scene. On January 2, the Winter of Reading challenge launches at any Denver Public Library branch, featuring a game board with 24 activities in multiple languages. Completing five in a row earns prizes, and city librarian Nicolle Davies notes, “These days, it can be hard to disconnect from our digital screens. Our Winter of Reading challenge encourages people to connect with the community and engage with our library services in ways they probably haven’t imagined before.”

First Friday brings free admission to several venues along Santa Fe Drive. At the Museo de las Americas from 5 to 9 p.m., visitors can view the Rosas y Revelaciones exhibit and create a manifestation map for the year ahead. The Denver Art Society hosts displays by over 150 Colorado artists alongside live performances: Mr. Kneel from 5 to 6 p.m., Marzo Veinte from 6 to 7 p.m., Midnight Soulbirds from 7 to 8 p.m., Sunrise Drive from 8 to 9 p.m., and Pilot Haus from 9 to 10 p.m. Additional music plays in Underground Studios with Elephant in the Room and at the Tree House with DJ Zobain, MOOSGH, and Federal Bureau of Funk.

Saturday, January 3, includes First Saturday Birding at 3 p.m. at Croke Reservoir in Northglenn, where participants can spot Front Range birds—bring binoculars. McGregor Square hosts an ’80s retro skate session with free entry and tunes from the era; ’80s outfits get 50 percent off rentals. At 8 p.m., Goosetown Tavern features a free Emo/Y2K DJ set by HOWRU for nostalgic vibes.

Ongoing attractions include the Light the Lights show at the City and County Building, running daily through January 25 with performances at 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Scientific and Cultural Facilities District free days continue, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave on January 7 and Denver Art Museum on January 13.
