J.B. Holmes qualifies for U.S. Open after long layoff

J.B. Holmes has earned a spot in this week's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills following a successful final qualifying performance.

The 44-year-old golfer advanced through final qualifying at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Ohio last week. He survived a four-for-three playoff to secure his place in the field.

This marks Holmes' first PGA Tour start since July of last year. His most recent major appearance ended with an 87 at the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Holmes has two young sons and has focused on family in recent years. He described spending time with them as his priority away from competition.

The U.S. Open will be his 10th appearance in the event and his first major since that difficult final round seven years ago.
