Jackson Koivun turns pro ahead of U.S. Open

Jackson Koivun, the world’s top-ranked amateur, is competing at this week’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills after turning professional last week.

Koivun held a pre-tournament press conference on Monday in Southampton, N.Y. He discussed his recent decision to join the PGA Tour through its college program.

The 21-year-old Auburn University junior won six of 13 tournaments this season. His team captured the national title, and he became the first player in college golf history to win the Haskins, Hogan and Nicklaus awards more than once.

Koivun said he delayed turning pro for a year to gain maturity. He noted he felt ready mentally after another season of college golf.

He recalled missing the cut at last year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont and described the challenges of Shinnecock Hills, where the event was last held in 2018.
