Jack Draper reveals mental health struggles ahead of Eastbourne return

British tennis player Jack Draper has spoken about the mental toll of his injury-plagued year as he prepares to return at the Lexus Eastbourne Open.

Draper, 24, has been sidelined for most of the past year by chronic arm and knee injuries. He last competed in early April at the Barcelona Open, where he retired due to knee tendinitis after a seven-month absence from a bone bruise in his left arm.

The former world No. 4 has slipped to No. 160 in the rankings. At a pre-tournament press conference he described the difficulty of watching his progress stall.

"It’s been an incredibly difficult year," Draper said. "It’s like you’re watching your decline. So it’s tough."

Draper has added Andy Murray to his team as coach for the grass-court swing. He credited Murray with helping adjust his serve mechanics and said the change has eased some injury concerns ahead of Wimbledon.

Jack Draper retired from his Barcelona Open match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry due to injury after winning the first set. The British player, returning from previous setbacks, struggled with movement issues in his right knee during the third set. Draper vowed on Instagram to work through the problem.

World No. 7 Taylor Fritz has withdrawn from the upcoming Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 event because of ongoing knee tendinitis. The injury, which has troubled him since early 2025, forced the decision after his third-round loss at the Miami Open. Fritz aims to prioritize recovery ahead of the grass-court season.

Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the Monte-Carlo Masters, ending his 15-year streak of participation since 2011. The 38-year-old, a two-time champion at the event, has not played since a fourth-round loss at the BNP Paribas Open two weeks ago. Officials cited no specific reason, though speculation points to a right shoulder issue.

Andy Murray has rejected a journalist's assertion that Novak Djokovic paid him $100,000 per week during their coaching partnership. The former world number one described the report as one of the top five lies he has encountered.
