John Ross Bowie discusses role in The Big Bang Theory spin-off

Actor John Ross Bowie shared insights into his expanded character Barry Kripke during production of the upcoming HBO Max series Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. The spin-off follows tertiary The Big Bang Theory characters on a multiverse adventure. Bowie described Kripke's ongoing traits and new dimensions in the show.

Bowie, who played Kripke across 11 seasons of The Big Bang Theory, said the multiverse concept quickly appealed to him. He noted that co-creator Bill Prady pitched the role as similar to Dr. Smith from the original Lost in Space series.

Filming is underway on the Universal lot for the Warner Bros. Discovery production. Bowie said the variety in each episode delights the crew, with wardrobe, sets and props changing frequently.

Kripke's speech impediment remains unchanged across realities, including in an inner monologue scene. Bowie explained that the trait adds depth, suggesting it stems from childhood bullying.

The series is scheduled to premiere Thursday, July 23 at 9 p.m. on HBO Max. Co-creators include Bill Prady, Zak Penn and Chuck Lorre, with Kyle Newacheck directing.
