LENTE continues voter education sessions in Tawi-Tawi for 2026 BARMM elections

The Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held two voter education sessions at MSU–Tawi-Tawi in Bongao for the 2026 BARMM Parliamentary Elections. This followed a session at TRAC the previous day. The sessions covered the BARMM parliamentary system, election issues, and voters' responsibilities.

The Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) launched its voter education rollout for the first 2026 BARMM Parliamentary Elections, starting with a session at TRAC in Tawi-Tawi. LENTE expressed gratitude to Dr. Sitti Amina J. Mohammad, president of TRAC, for hosting the activity. Facilitated by Atty. Helen Graido, LENTE's director for policy, the session engaged TRAC students in discussions on the BARMM Parliamentary System of Government, voters' rights and responsibilities, and issues like abuse of state resources, vote-buying, and disinformation.

On the following day, LENTE held two sessions at MSU–Tawi-Tawi in Bongao, involving students from marketing, education, and political science programs. The first was led by Atty. Helen Graido, and the second by Ms. Louwallien Donnah Velez of LENTE. Topics included the BARMM parliamentary system, upcoming elections, voters' roles, and key issues such as abuse of state resources, vote-buying, and disinformation.

These sessions form part of LENTE's ongoing voter education efforts across the Bangsamoro region this April, following the registration of parties and organizations, as the filing of Certificates of Candidacy and the official election period approach. LENTE remains committed to empowering voters and strengthening electoral participation.

The Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) urged the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliament to retain the 'none of the above' or NOTA option on ballots for the region's first parliamentary elections, calling it a substantive democratic mechanism to reflect voter dissatisfaction. The BARMM Parliament's committee approved its removal on January 19 to simplify voting and prevent confusion. LENTE argued that NOTA provides voters with a genuine and meaningful alternative choice in the Bangsamoro elections.

In January 2026, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority passed a long-delayed districting measure to enable the region's first parliamentary elections. Yet, the election date remains uncertain due to legal and operational issues. Comelec Chairman George Garcia stated that holding the polls by the Supreme Court's March 31, 2026 deadline is no longer feasible.

Building on recent watchdog warnings of collapse risks in the BARMM peace process, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao continues its unfinished journey toward stable autonomy. Rooted in decades of conflict from Martial Law-era violence to peace agreements, today's repeated election delays—exacerbated by court rulings and pandemic fallout—threaten to deepen divisions, as experts and local leaders caution.
