Mainland Chinese mother spared jail for school bribe attempt

A mainland Chinese mother received a suspended jail sentence on Tuesday after offering a bribe to secure a Hong Kong school place for her son. Cai Yu, 39, admitted underestimating the consequences of her actions in Tuen Mun Court.

Cai Yu, who lives in Shenzhen, met assistant principal Danny Hung Siu-tan of CMA Choi Cheung Kok Secondary School in September 2024. She offered HK$10,000 to help enroll her 15-year-old son.

Hung refused the bribe and informed Cai that he was under investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. The boy had declined to sit the required admission exam.

Cai was also accused of deleting evidence after authorities began their probe. Acting principal magistrate Daniel Tang Siu-hung handed down the suspended sentence at Tuen Mun Court.
