Marcos eyes nuclear energy partnership with Russia

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the Philippines is willing to work with Russia on nuclear energy, focusing on small modular reactors during his visit to Kazan.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. made the remarks on Friday while in Kazan, Russia. He spoke to Russia Today during a working visit and expressed interest in collaborating on the country’s nuclear energy program.

Marcos noted that the Philippines is assessing emerging nuclear technologies, especially small modular reactors. He said Russia leads in this area.

“I think Russia is the most advanced, especially when we talk about small modular reactors, which is particularly interesting for the Philippines because we have 7,600 plus islands and it is impossible for us to build submarine cables to every place that needs power,” Marcos said.

Such reactors range from 70 to 300 megawatts and can supply power to single islands or remote areas, with capacity expandable as needed.
