The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team climbed to the top spot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll on February 16, 2026, after a strong 24-1 season. Coach Dusty May emphasized that the ranking means little compared to the ultimate goal of a national championship. The team received 60 of 61 first-place votes following Arizona's recent losses.

The Michigan Wolverines secured the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll for the first time since January 2013, marking the fifth such occasion in program history alongside the 1964-65, 1976-77, 1992-93, and 2012-13 seasons. Three of those previous top-ranked teams reached the national title game. Michigan earned the spot with a 24-1 record, including a 14-1 mark in Big Ten play, after topping other major rankings like the USA Today coaches poll, NET, KenPom, BartTorvik, and EvanMiya.

The Wolverines' impressive resume includes a top-10 national strength of schedule, top-five rankings in KenPom's adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency, a perfect 9-0 record in Quad 1 games, and 18 combined Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins—the most in Division I. All but four victories have been by double digits, with 13 by 20 or more points, seven by 40 or more (a Big Ten record), and 10 by at least 30 points through 25 games, the first for a high-major team since Duke in 1998-99. In conference play, Michigan leads with a 16.9-point margin of victory.

Recent results solidified the climb: a comeback win over Northwestern by 12 points after trailing by 16, closing on a 45-17 run, and an 86-56 rout of UCLA, turning a two-point halftime lead into a 30-point victory. Arizona's losses to Kansas and Texas Tech opened the door.

Coach Dusty May downplayed the milestone, stating, “It means absolutely nothing right now... It’s awesome for our fans... But as far as internally or emotionally, it doesn’t mean anything.” He credited the team's talent and preparation: “These guys deserve it... it’s a testament to the work.” Guard Nimari Burnett added, “It means a lot... Being No. 1 in the country is a blessing. It shows how good we are together.” Forward Will Tschetter focused on the process: “Whether or not we get (the No. 1 ranking), we're lost in the process making sure that at the middle of April we're No. 1.”

Michigan faces a challenging schedule ahead, including at No. 7 Purdue, versus No. 3 Duke, at No. 10 Illinois, at Iowa, and home against No. 15 Michigan State. The team boasts the best 25-game start in program history and the first multiple double-digit win streaks since the 1992-93 Fab Five season.
