Major League Baseball owners have approved allowing big league players to compete in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The move would require an 11-day pause in the MLB season that includes the All-Star Game. The players' union has not yet agreed due to several unresolved issues.
The proposed pause would run from July 9 to July 21, 2028. It would feature the Home Run Derby on July 10, the All-Star Game on July 11, and the start of a six-team Olympic baseball tournament on July 13 at Dodger Stadium. The United States would receive an automatic berth as the host nation.
Negotiations between the league and the MLB Players Association continue. Key sticking points include hotel rooms, tickets, insurance, NIL rights and a proposed mandatory-participation agreement that could place non-compliant players on the restricted list without pay.
Baseball has not been part of the Olympics since 2020. The 2028 tournament would mark its return as a full medal event.
