Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Kuala Lumpur on February 7, 2026, marked a pivotal moment for India-Malaysia relations. In talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, both nations pledged to deepen ties in high-priority sectors including trade and investment, defense, energy, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductors. Committed to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, Modi stated, 'Our message on terrorism is clear: no double standards, no compromise.'

The leaders welcomed efforts to promote the use of local currencies—the Indian Rupee and Malaysian Ringgit—for trade settlements. A total of 11 agreements and documents were inked, including a framework for enhanced engagement in the semiconductor sector. Modi announced India's decision to establish a Consulate General in Malaysia.

Modi met with Malaysian ministers, MPs, and senators of Indian origin, including Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Human Resources Minister Ramanan Ramakrishnan, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department M Kulasegaran, and Deputy Minister of National Unity R Yuneswaran. He appreciated their role in strengthening bilateral ties.

In interactions with industry leaders, Modi engaged with PETRONAS President and Group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik, Berjaya Corporation founder Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, Khazanah Nasional Berhad Managing Director Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, and Phison Electronics founder Pua Khein Seng. He highlighted India's reforms for ease of doing business and urged Malaysian firms to explore opportunities in infrastructure, renewable energy, digital technology, semiconductors, AI, and healthcare.

Ibrahim praised India's economic growth and reaffirmed support for India's permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council. The joint statement condemned terrorism in all forms and agreed to enhance cooperation against radicalization and terror financing. This visit represents a significant step in bolstering the strategic partnership between India and Malaysia.
