Nova passarela em Chesongo é levada por enchentes poucas horas após inauguração

Moradores do vilarejo de Chesongo, em Baringo Central, ficaram perplexos após uma nova passarela ser levada por enchentes na mesma noite em que foi oficialmente inaugurada. A ponte foi aberta no domingo pela Chefe de Agricultura do Condado de Baringo, Milka Toromo.

A passarela de ferro e cimento foi arrastada por fortes enchentes na noite de domingo. Os moradores dependiam anteriormente de uma ponte de madeira, com crianças em idade escolar enfrentando os maiores riscos durante as chuvas ao atravessar o rio cheio.

Os moradores contribuíram com 500 xelins por família para a nova ponte, enquanto Milka Toromo e outros doadores somaram mais de 150.000 xelins para concluir o projeto. O morador local Vincent Kiloo disse que usou a ponte na tarde de domingo para levar alguém ao hospital, mas soube na segunda-feira que ela havia sido levada pela água.

“Ainda estou surpreso com o fato de uma ponte de ferro e cimento poder ser levada em um dia, enquanto a de madeira durou mais de cinco anos”, disse Kiloo. Restos da ponte foram encontrados 200 metros rio abaixo.

Alguns moradores, incluindo Edwin Chacha, alegam que a ponte foi mal construída com materiais fracos. Eles agora apelam ao governo do condado por ajuda para construir uma substituta, já que as crianças precisam ser carregadas novamente nas costas para atravessar o rio e chegar à escola.
