New laws on crime and cousin marriages take effect

Eleven legal changes in the justice area enter into force in Sweden today as the government presented a new proposal to restrict the lives of gang criminals.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer presented the proposal during a press conference in Rosenbad. It means an investigation will be appointed to create a register where gang criminals and their relatives can be red-flagged.

The purpose is to block access to benefits, public positions and certain places without the person having been convicted of a crime. Strömmer said the goal is to make it difficult to be a gang criminal in Sweden.

At the same time several new laws enter into force. Cousin marriages are banned and psychological violence becomes punishable by up to four years in prison. Penalties are also tightened for forced marriage and child marriage.
